Music found me before I found my voice.
I was around eight years old when I fell in love with singing, belting songs to the open water on the Star Ferry between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, the way only a child with no audience could.
That changed in 1997 when I entered the New Talent Singing Awards Vancouver. I made it to the finals. I was terrible that night. Nerves, spotlights, everything. But something about that failure made me want to get better. The performances that followed, church stages, community events, MC work, kept adding up. By the time I stopped counting the stages, I had become a different kind of performer than the kid who froze under the spotlights in 1997.
Volunteering at a radio show taught me to organise what was inside my head into something communicable. Writing lyrics turned out to be the same work, just quieter. It became the place where my love of music and my need to express myself finally lived together.
I released my first original songs in 2000. The album A Different Life followed in 2010. Music in my life has never been loud or constant, but it has always been there.
